KNOW YOUR BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)

Hey Fitnation, It’s Wednesday morning and I’m sure you are as glad as I am to start the new day on a healthy note because enjoying great health is second best to being alive.

Enjoying great health transcends merely looking healthy; it involves being fit, enjoying vitality and maintaining a healthy and functioning body system.
In Nigeria where being obese signifies wealth and affluence while slim people are considered hungry, one would easily understand why many Nigerians are obese.

I stumbled upon the body mass index calculation few months back which made me realize that even at 88kg I was still overweight.
I posted a picture on facebook  after dropping from 95kg to 88kg,this sparked an argument amongst my friends; some of them felt that I was still overweight at 88kg. Disappointed, I went to google to search for answers to the best weight for a 6.1ft body frame, that’s how I discovered this simple formula.

I will like to introduce to you this basic health indicator called the BMI(Body Mass Index) Formula.
The Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

You can calculate your BMI by visiting this website: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm

Do take time to calculate your BMI before setting your fitness goals as it is a great way to start your fitness journey.

I currently weigh 85kg (187.393lbs) and my Body Mass Index is Normal.

Let’s have fun with this, post a comment below with your BMI and let’s know who the fit 9jarians are.

Cheers to the fit life!

DO YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH?

Hey Fitnation, It’s the 2nd week in the New Year; the frenzy is dying down and businesses are slowly picking up. One of the things I like about the New year holidays is that it gives me a chance to make new resolutions and set new goals. Don’t get me wrong I practise goal setting every day; as an entrepreneur, goal setting is one of the key activities that guarantee success.  There is something about the ‘New year resolution ritual’ that makes it different from daily goal setting; the realisation that you have 365 fresh days to attain a goal, learn a habit or skill is very encouraging.
However the problem with New Year resolutions is that they are hard to keep. Yes! They are very hard to keep especially when you are trying to drop old habits or learn a new habit.

We all have goals for the New Year; some of these goals are health and fitness related. How do you intend to keep to these goals? Will you be among 95% of the people who would have slipped back to their old ways before the end of the first quarter?
For me, I think the reason most people fail to follow up on their resolutions is because they do not want these goals bad enough, maybe they wish to attain them but are indifferent about achieving these goals or not, so they give up after a few unsuccessful attempts.

I read this story about a teenager who asked his father how he could be successful in life, rather than answering the question his father  took him to a nearby stream and submerged his head in water, he held his head down till the little boy started to gasp for breath, his father  took his head out of the water and asked him; “what did you yearn for most when your head was in the water”? The boy answered "AIR!! I just wanted to breathe to stay alive". His father then said to him: “if you want success as bad as you want air, you will be successful”.

This statement is true for every goal we set in life; be it financial, marital goals, fitness or health related goals. If you want it bad as bad as you want to breathe, success will be attained.
Treat your New Year goals and resolutions like your life depends on them and you will see the results you expect.

Cheers to the Fit life.

STEPPING UP INTO 2016

Happy New Year fit people!!! I pray that 2016 brings fulfillment and abundance our way.

As a typical Ibo man, I traveled to my hometown to mark the New Year celebration. Amidst the occasions going on I was determined to stay fit and not add all the extra fat that comes with the holidays. One of the ways I achieved this was by doing a step run on the famous stairs of the Ogbunike cave located in Ogbunike Village, Oyi local government area of Anambra state.

The Stairs to the Cave's entrance

My visit to the Ogbunike cave was educating; I interacted with the guard at the cave and he told me of the myth surrounding the cave.
I learnt that the people of Ogbunike believe that the cave saved their ancestors during the civil war. They believe that a python that lives in the cave protected the people of the community and ate intruding enemies. Till this day, the people of Ogbunike ‘worship’ the python; it is a sacrilegious taboo to kill a python on Ogbunike land.

After listening to the stories about the cave, I did a step run on the 310 stairs that lead into the cave.
Climbing up the stairs to the top was really hard because of the number of the stairs; I was only able to go up and down the stairs 3 times before I finally gassed out.

Staying Fit is a lifestyle and I’m always on the lookout for fun ways to exercise and stay fit wherever I go. I like to try new things; I like to take risks because I believe that growth comes from taking risks.

You should visit the Ogbunike Cave next time you are in Anambra state and you will love your experience with nature.
